Our 2022 DAY OF HOPE put the fun in fundraising with a high-impact, festival-style event that celebrated our multicultural school community while raising valuable funds for 100% hOPE – a charity that King's supports in Uganda. 100% hOPE provide many necessities and programs for orphaned and underprivileged children where the charity owns 11.5 acres of land in Mityana. They are currently building Hope Village with children's homes, a medical clinic, primary, secondary and vocational training schools and self-sustainable projects to make a significant difference in the lives and future of hundreds of children and communities. It was incredible to see our entire College community getting behind our Missions program by donating to the charity, purchasing items from our LIFE Canteen and experiencing the cultural concerts performed in the Amphitheatre by our talented groups of Samoan, Tongan, Maori, Japanese and Chinese students. Our Kindy and Pre Prep students were also treated to their own special multicultural show in the Noah's Ark garden. As we regularly practise our Foundational Values at King's and faithfully show love and compassion for people in need, we can change the world for good. Thank you families for your continued generosity!
National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology. This year’s theme was 'Glass: More than meets the eye' and was based on the UN's International Year of Glass. It celebrated the many roles that this incredibly useful material plays in our lives – from phone screens to optical fibre to glassware in labs. The topic also focused on the use of substituting plastics for glass, as a part of our sustainable future. King's enjoy participating in this national initiative every year as a way to explore the incredibly complex and interesting world God has created, through the lens of science.
Once again, our Main Library collaborated with King's Science Department to facilitate interactive science activities during lunch breaks in the library's communal space. The team, led by Mr Flood, also hosted science experiments in the Years 7 - 9 assemblies this week and presented an extravagant Science Show during lunchtime on Thursday, where spectators watched objects exploding off the C Block balcony, with the help of liquid nitrogen. In Primary, students enjoyed incursions with presenters from Street Science, where they built and launched their own mini rocket ships. To cap off another incredible National Science Week, our Year 5 students exhibited their Science Fair projects for our school community (read more about this story via the button below).
Year 5 Science FairYear 9 headed north to tropical Cairns to explore the Great Barrier Reef and local attractions for their camp in Term 3. This tour is designed to celebrate the students' Middle School journey and transition into Senior School. It was great to see students make the most of this opportunity and create memories to last a lifetime. The majority of students agreed the highlight of the trip was snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef. They were able to tick this off their bucket list with some of their best friends as they explored the coral reef and searched for turtles and other exciting creatures beneath the water.
Other activities that students experienced, included:
The Year 11 camp was split into genders again in 2022. Our boys headed to Alexandra Park and the girls travelled to Noosa. There were a lot of positive comments from the split camp and our students made the most of this opportunity with smaller numbers and new activities to try. The girls' camp was based at the Elanda Eco Camp which is uniquely located in the Cooloola National Park and only a short 25-minute drive from Noosa. The 65-acre site, with 500 meters of beachfront on the Noosa River is a peaceful and relaxing place for students to take a slower approach to the normal busy camp programs. Activities included mountain bike riding, canoeing, archery tag and the amazing race challenge. Night one of devotions included a PJ party and a chance to create words of encouragement. Our boys headed to one of our favourite campsites - Alexandra Park - and were excited heading into camp as they were keen to head out on the tinnies and fish on the Maroochy river. Lots of fish were caught and conditions were perfect. Devotions tested and challenged our students. Mr Muir and his team were able to connect with the boys with less distractions and create an environment where boys could be young men. Sumo suit wrestling was a hit! Afternoons were allocated to House activities where students had a chance to display leadership qualities for positions in 2023. VIP House dinners were a big motivation leading into the second day of activities. Congratulations Newton on taking out the Ruth Van Werkhoven trophy!
Wednesday, 10 August, marked 100 days until our Year 12s graduate from King's. They celebrated with breakfast pancakes together in The Hub and a PJ dress-up day but there was no sleeping in class for these busy students who are working hard to finish well. Enjoy your final 100 days at King's Year 12!
Year 5 students have been busy this term planning, hypothesising and conducting the science experiments they had designed to help the community using science and technology. From topics such as looking at the effect of background music on student learning, finding ways to help people with mental illness live a happier life, to reducing CO2 in the environment; the students all took a unique approach to their projects. Over the past few weeks, they finished and displayed their findings for the Year 5 Science Fair on Friday 19 August, as part of our National Science Week celebrations. The breezeway precinct came alive for the Fair as the budding scientists eagerly shared their interesting research with the College community. Special guests included Pre Prep - Year 4 students, a canine friend, and a number of teachers and parents. Staff from King's Science Department - Mr Flood and Mr Holman, as well as teacher, Mrs Tivinan - attended the Science Fair as guest judges. They were impressed with the exceptional effort that all students had put into their work and were very pleased to see their scientific inquiry skills developing.
Congratulations Year 5 on all of your hard work and intriguing discoveries and well done to our 2022 winners!
Thursday, 11 August, marked an important milestone day for our Prep students as they celebrated 100 DAYS IN PREP. The special occasion was a chance to recognise all that our youngest King’s kids have achieved at school so far. Prep is characterised by new faces, new places and new experiences, and our students have all embraced their first 100 days with curiosity and courage. From meeting our larger than life King’s lion on Day One, to learning to read, write, count, make friends, and much more, these students have developed in so many ways.
On the first day of Prep, students received their own King’s teddy, and these bears returned for the event in freshly-decorated singlets, where they enjoyed cupcakes for a teddy bear’s picnic. Our amazing teachers embraced the festivities and dressed as 100-year-olds who were showing their age. Our Prep community really enjoyed the chance to celebrate their time at school so far and we are so excited to continue this learning adventure with them for the rest of Prep... and beyond!
This term, our Chapel theme “The Master Chef” has helped students understand that God has the recipe for their lives and is cooking up good things for their future! Each week, our chaplains have presented different tasty foods, using them to illustrate timeless biblical truths from the Bible in an engaging fun atmosphere that has been memorable and entertaining.
Topics so far have included:
Thanks to our incredible Chaplaincy team who always make learning the Bible so much fun!
It has also been great to have parents join us for coffee at King's Table at 8.30am on Tuesday mornings and stay for chapel at 9am. The feedback from parents has been that they love our chapels as much as we do! Parents are always welcome to join us for Bean to Chapel throughout the term to experience our unique King's Chapels. On Sunday, 11 September, Primary families are invited to join us at the 'Beyond' chapel during the Sunday morning service at Kings Church. Come and have a ‘taste’ of our chapels and meet all the Kings church team! Free coffee and donuts will be served after the service.
Prep - Year 2 enjoyed their exciting 2022 Athletics Carnival at King's on Wednesday, 10 August, and attempted all of the track and field activities with enthusiasm and determination. They participated in mini-events such as novelty relays, sprints, foam rocket throwing, long jump, high jump and ball games. Our incredible Carnival was boosted by a huge turnout of King’s families who added to the full-filled vibe. Well done to all of our athletes for giving your best and to our speedy sprint winners who crossed the finish line fastest to receive a ribbon for their age group. Congratulations RAYLEIGH who won the House Champions title!

The AFA South QLD Futsal Championships was held at Nissan Arena last week and King’s had nine teams qualify, which is a fantastic achievement. Our U9, U13 and U14 boys made the semi-finals, where all of our teams showed incredible skill and sportsmanship in their nail-biting Grand Final matches, each coming in second overall. King's U10 girls team won their Grand Final and are now ranked as the top U10 girls team in South Queensland. Well done to all teams and we look forward to the next stage at the Australasian Championships!
After qualifying through the competitive Southern Coast Regional Trials, three of King's netball teams qualified for the Vicki Wilson State Finals held at Nissan Arena in Week 4. King's were the only school to have a team qualifying in all categories: Open Girls, Junior Girls, and Open Boys (for the first time!). This is one of the most prestigious and competitive tournaments in Queensland and all of our teams placed within the Top 6 teams in the State.
This team placed 6th in the State out of 66 teams in Queensland and are the Number One boy's team on the Gold Coast! This talented team is comprised of students who excel in a range of different sports at King's, bringing together various skills to their netball game. They worked hard during lunchtime breaks to train and are now ready to take on the world of netball again next year.
After a hard year of work and dedication, our Junior Girls went from strength to strength throughout the tournament. Dominating in their pool with some tough competition, they progressed through to a tough-fought Grand Final and finished Second in Queensland. This was a massive achievement and is only the beginning for our Junior Girls team. Congratulations girls!
This team has battled and conquered all year round and played their best netball as a team, throuhgout the Vicki Wilson weekend tournament. The girls challenged all their competitors through their pool and finals campaign, and made it through to the Grand Final. They also successfully claimed Second Place in Queensland, which is an outstanding result for our College. Well done girls!
We are very proud of all of our netballer's efforts and excited to see what the future holds for these teams.

A number of our College alumni from the Class of 2012 - 'The Year of Synergy' - came together at Surfers Pavilion on Saturday, 13 August, for their Ten Year Reunion. This special occasion celebrated our 2012 graduates and their lives beyond King's. It was heartwarming to hear about their various adventures, careers and plans, and their fond reminiscence of their days as King's students. They commented on how much they loved their reunion and the chance to catch up with old friends. Some had travelled interstate to attend, while others came from as away as their new hometown of Los Angeles. Thank you all for being part of this very special event and we pray God's continued blessing over your lives!
On Thursday, 4 August, King's took a group of six Year 12 female leaders to attend the Emerging Young Women Leaders Business Skills Masterclass at Southern Cross University (SCU). Chloe Muller (College Captain), Imogen Schweitzer, Chelsea Lum, Avalon Otene, Sayla Donnelly and Emma Shearer all relished the unique opportunity to hear from a panel of phenomenal women who are all experienced in change creation, within their chosen fields. King's own alumnus, Candice Richards (Class of 2018) was among the panel of advisors as she shared her story as an aspiring Occupational Therapist and a current Student Ambassador at SCU. The girls learned some tips for delivering a memorable elevator pitch, success hacks for leaders, and future career advice. It was a privilege to honour these amazing students by giving them an opportunity to glean insights from like-minded women, to help them continue to grow as Christian leaders for tomorrow's generation.
King's Year 11 Digital Art student, Belle, created these impressive multiple-exposure works by using her student classmates as models. The behind-the-scenes photo shows Belle creating the silhouette for her art pieces, and depicts some of the creative techniques that Digital Art students apply in class. This particular technique uses a transparent backing screen so that the white areas in the photos are very white, while the figure is very dark. This light contrast allows for a better result when creating and editing a multiple-exposure artwork. Also studying Year 11 Visual Art, Belle is able to choose the direction of her artistic style. She has found such great success with her multiple-exposure photography that she is now applying a similar technique from Digital Art in her Visual Art. Well done Belle on creating such wonderful artwork!

Last weekend, King’s Skipperoos participated in two major jump rope competitions. In both events, Personal Best scores were achieved and medals and ribbons were won. The Regional Speed Event was hosted by Earnshaw State College in Brisbane on Sunday, 14 August, and was attended by Skipperoos Bonnie, Chloe, Bella, Cindy, Addison and Ashlee. The girls competed against other schools and clubs in 30, 60 and 90-second speed, double unders, triple unders, relays and double dutch speed events. The day was a great opportunity to join with other skippers and to get in some competition practice before travelling to the upcoming National Championships. Thanks to coach Jill and our King's parents who attended to make the event a success. See their results below:
Regional Speed Event ResultsThree of our senior athletes, Charlotte, Jordan and Jasmine, travelled to Canberra to compete in the NSW/ACT State Championship which was held at Queanbeyan from 13 - 14 August. This was a great preparation event for the upcoming National Championships which will be held in Darwin during the September school holidays. The athletes competed in all speed events as well as freestyle events. This event was a fun way to connect and compete with other athletes who are also preparing for Nationals. See their results below:
NSW/ACT State Championship ResultsOn Friday, 19 August, the competition team (who are soon heading to Darwin for Nationals), were presented with their own backpack filled with a few exciting surprises, compliments of Suncorp. We would like to thank Mr Mpala from Suncorp for presenting the backpacks, water bottles and money boxes to the team. We would also like to thank Mr Meyers, Mrs Payne, Mr Grady, Mr Sutherland and Mr Gallard for all of their help and support.

Construction on our new Primary learning precinct has been progressing steadily over the past two terms, and despite wet weather and material supply delays in the early stages, we are on track for the scheduled completion date. This week marked a milestone in the project, with the installation of the building’s extensive roof. This will significantly reduce the impact of rain on the continued construction of the building, allowing the ground floor plaster fit-out to progress from next week.
We often have more than 30 contractors onsite each day including roofers, carpenters, plumbers, electricians, security monitoring, mechanics, metal workers and concreters, to name a few. This busy construction site has already seen the first-floor internal framing completed, the aluminium windows and doors installed throughout the building, the ground-floor internal framing nearly completed, and the external brick cladding started this week. We have also ordered all of the classroom furniture and specialist equipment to ensure it arrives when the new learning space is ready to be furnished in early December, for the start of classes in 2023.
We appreciate your ongoing support as we build together for tomorrow’s generation of Christian leaders!
King's Primary look forward to welcoming our amazing dads to school on Thursday, 1 September, for a Father's Day celebration afternoon. The event will include interactive games and activities around the campus grounds, with the specific year-level locations to be advised closer to the event.
