Helping Your Child Navigate Anxiety: Insights from Michelle Mitchell
As parents, we often notice when our children are anxious. It can show up as restlessness, irritability, difficulty sleeping, or avoidance of certain situations. While it's natural for children to feel anxious at times—whether it's about a test, a social situation, or something else—persistent or intense anxiety can have a significant impact on their well-being. So, how can we help them?
Michelle Mitchell, a respected author and expert on child development and anxiety, offers valuable insights into understanding and supporting children who experience anxiety. She believes that the way we approach anxiety can play a critical role in helping children feel empowered and capable of handling their fears. www.michellemitchell.org
Understanding Anxiety in Children
Anxiety is not just about feeling scared or worried—it's an emotional response that can lead to physical symptoms like a racing heart, sweaty palms, or tightness in the chest. For children, this can feel overwhelming, especially when they don’t have the language or coping strategies to manage these intense emotions.
Mitchell explains that anxiety often stems from a child’s perception of danger, even if that danger is not real. For example, a child might feel anxious about going to school because they worry about being having no friends to play with or failing a test, even if there is no immediate threat. This is why understanding the root cause of anxiety is so important.
How Parents Can Help
Validate Their Feelings - Children often feel misunderstood or dismissed when they’re anxious. Validate your child’s feelings by saying things like, “I understand you're feeling nervous about going to school today. It’s okay to feel that way.” By acknowledging their emotions, you help them feel seen and understood, which can reduce the intensity of their anxiety.
1- Normalise Anxiety - Anxiety is a normal part of life and is a topic parents should talk about openly. When children understand anxiety is something everyone experiences and it doesn’t define who they are, they are more likely to feel less isolated.
2-Teach Coping Skills – Parents can equip their children with tools such as grounding techniques, deep breathing exercises, or simple mindfulness strategies. These skills can help calm the body and mind when they’re feeling overwhelmed.
3-Create a Predictable Routine - Anxiety can thrive in unpredictable environments; children often feel more secure when they know what to expect. Establishing a consistent routine at home, particularly around bedtime and school preparations, can provide a sense of stability. When children feel in control of their environment, their anxiety may decrease.
4-Encourage Gradual Exposure - For children who avoid anxiety-provoking situations, gradual exposure can help, like talking through an upcoming event.
5-Know When to Seek Professional Help - While anxiety is common, it can sometimes become overwhelming or interfere with daily life. If your child’s anxiety persists or significantly impacts their ability to function, seeking help from a mental health professional may be necessary. Michelle Mitchell advocates for early intervention, noting that the sooner children receive support, the better their chances for learning how to manage their anxiety effectively.
A Lasting Impact
Michelle Mitchell believes that helping children manage their anxiety doesn’t just benefit them in the moment—it equips them with tools they can use throughout their lives. By addressing anxiety early and providing ongoing support, we can help our children develop resilience, confidence, and emotional intelligence.
As parents, your role in guiding your child through moments of anxiety is invaluable. By offering understanding, validation, and practical tools, you can help them develop healthy coping mechanisms that will serve them well into adulthood.
Hot Dog Day was a resounding success, bringing smiles and delicious treats to our school community! The Life team, alongside our fantastic parent ambassadors, cooked and served hot dogs that students thoroughly enjoyed during the second break. The atmosphere was vibrant, with ELC and Primary students sporting their craziest socks while high schoolers embraced their creativity by dressing up as dynamic duos.
This fun-filled event kicked off the last week of the term on a high note and fostered a sense of camaraderie among the students. All proceeds from Hot Dog Day will go to 5Fold, supporting initiatives that benefit our community. A huge thank you to everyone who made this day memorable and successful. We can't wait to see what other exciting events are in store before the term ends!
