The night of Friday, October 20 was an unforgettable one for our Year 3 students. Giddy with excitement and filled with energy, they gathered on the top oval for a sleepover that they would cherish for a long time. The afternoon was spent pitching their tents with their parents. Once tents and beds were established, the night kicked off with a special chapel service led by Pastor Matt. This was followed by an uplifting Praise and Worship session, surrounded by the tranquil beauty of our school campus at twilight. Delicious Subway sandwiches and cookies fuelled our young adventurers before commencing the evening rotations.
Dressed in House colours, the Year 3's were divided into House teams and participated in 4 rotations which consisted of a Lego building, a Kahoot quiz, guided dance, and a range of sports activities. After all the activities, our Year 3 students laughed, gasped, and enjoyed a film on the big screen while under the stars. Throughout the night, there was plenty of fun to be had talking to friends and playing games around the tent sites. It was heart-warming to see these young students strengthen their friendships and create lasting memories.
Eventually, the exhaustion of an action-packed evening took its toll, and the kids drifted off to sleep around 10:30 pm. However, the night didn't last forever, and as the first light of dawn broke around 5 am, our Year 3 students were greeted by a new day. The early risers were in for a treat, as parents and students were treated to coffee or hot chocolate and delicious pastries. It was a perfect way to start the morning after a night of adventure. Families promptly packed up their tents and headed home by 7:30 am.
The Year 3 sleepover was a testament to the strong sense of community and the commitment to providing students with unique and memorable experiences at our school. It was an event that not only created lasting memories but also allowed our young students to grow and bond with their friends. We thank the parents who came along and participated in the Year 3 sleepover. Without your support, this night would not have been possible.
The Year 4 Instrumental Music Concert was held in the College auditorium on Thursday, 2 November. It was exciting for our budding young students to perform in their first concert on their orchestral instruments to a live audience of parents and their Year 3 peers. Many audience members commented on how impressed they were with the students' skills, especially as many had only been learning to play an instrument this year. The parents were treated to a video of their child's skills at the beginning of this musical journey. Our young musicians thoroughly enjoyed the experience and their enthusiasm for playing a musical instrument was evident. Thank you to so many Year 4 parents for attending and to our Primary music teachers for helping our new musicians on their learning journey!
In September, Kingston Vay (6PC) participated in the U.S Kids Golf Australian Open in Rockhampton.
He participated in a two-day golf event, completing 18 holes each day. At the conclusion of the event, he secured the 5th position among all of the 11-year-old golfers in Australia. Well done, Kingston!
Kingston was also the second youngest player in this year's King's Golf Day.
King's Pimpama participated in Basketball Queensland's CBSQ Sophomore Tournament which was held at the Carrara Indoor Stadium at the end of October 2023.
Game 1 – King's Christian College vs Groves Christian College
It was a back-and-forth game with a lot of controversy. To start the game we had a few calls that would go against us and we were forced to dig deep and continue to finish off strong. Arik Mostered had a massive game grabbing 8 rebounds and 5 points. Joshua Phipson stepped up to bring us back in the game with some very big shots in the third and fourth quarter, scoring 12 points.
It was a hard-fought battle but we came up short going down to Groves 27-29.
Game 2 – King's Christian College vs Marymount College
Marymount started the game strong leading at the end of the first quarter 16-8. They maintained the lead by the end of the half 26-18. In the third quarter, King's managed to go on a run and find a way to bring the game back within reach, thanks to Joshua Phipson (14 points) and Azarian Minchi (8 points). Chad Watego added a spark off the bench, using his speed to score 10 points.
We came up short in the end and lost a close game 46-39. It was a 7-point loss to the team that would eventually win the competition. We showed we could compete with the top team in our tournament.
Game 3 - King's Christian College vs Pimpama State
We got off to a good start with Mason Fearn hitting a deep two-point shot to get us underway. Elias Flancia and Arnab Thapa showed their defensive capability and also combined for 9 points. Baily Tetonga and Bailey White did a good job on the rebounds dominating inside. 11 out of our 12 players scored this game and we were able to get our biggest win of the tournament winning the game 39-17.
We were knocked out of contention because we finished 3rd in our pool but we still managed to play another 3 games. We won two out of our next three games.
Our last game was the battle of PIMPAMA! We played against Pimpama State High School which had one player who was dominating the tournament. Tyler Jongwe and Josiah Barrett were given the task of guarding the best player on the other team, taking turns to make sure he didn’t get going. They did an amazing job keeping him out of the game and we managed to win the game by 8 points to finish the tournament.
We take away a lot of experience from this tournament. The group represented our school with honour and showed growth and maturity as a team.
Our future is looking bright!

On Tuesday 24 October, the Health Science Hub from WA came to our college to run a Career Taster Day program for Year 9 students. This program is designed to spark students’ curiosity about further study opportunities and potential careers in the fields of Forensic Science, Health Science, Fitness, and Animal Care industries. As students circulated through each session, industry experts facilitated a range of fun workshops and activities, such as making toys for animals to stimulate them, checking each other's heart rates, taking fingerprints, and a speed fitness challenge, that encouraged collaboration and creativity in order to solve real world challenges. Gilligan the Dalmatian won many hearts during the day.
It was great to see everyone embrace this opportunity and enthusiastically engage in the activities with curiosity and interest. Feedback from students showed that the program was enjoyed by all and was beneficial in giving the students an opportunity to think about a wide range of options available to them in the future.

As we wind down the year in the Careers Department, the following newsletter has some handy hints and interesting articles as well as events such as the Rise Information Session, Studen Wellbeing - Supporting self-regulation skills in the classroom, Griffith Deadly U Experience which is designed to introduce indigenous high school students in Year 8 to the university environment and build study aspirations. There is also a Year 9-10 Discovery Day at UniSQ in Springfield on 16 November, while JCU, on the same day, is giving local high school students with a passion and desire to develop a career in business, law, or finance the chance to learn from industry experts.
To Read the SWG Newsletter from 30 October 2023, please click here:The King’s staff are ever ready to improve their skills in teaching as assessment. One of those areas is writing assessments, especially for the senior maths subjects.
The maths team decided to reach out to the QCAA (Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority) for help in running an after-school afternoon of professional development. We also wanted this to benefit as many teachers as we could so we invited every school from all sectors that we could.
The PD afternoon was hosted last week at our Reedy Creek campus. Two QCAA experts joined us as well as representatives from thirteen Gold Coast schools, state, private, and catholic.
We learned so much and are confident that we can now write assessments of a higher level for our senior students. Networking is great but learning together is even better. This is why we started the Gold Coast Maths Teachers Network some years ago and many of those were the teachers who joined us.
At King’s, we have an excellent maths team across both Pimpama and Reedy Creek and are so glad that we can collaborate and grow together as maths teachers.
This learning and collaboration then flows on to bless our students and their families, which is what we are called to do, and hence why we do what we do.
