Easter Services at King's Pimpama
31 March 2022
As a Christian school, our foundation is firmly fixed on the rock of our Lord Jesus Christ. Easter is the most important time of the year, as we reflect on Jesus’ life, death and resurrection, and the gracious gift of eternal life that is offered to every person who believes in Him. Each year before Easter, our Chaplaincy team prepares an incredible service for all of our students where they are reminded of what that fateful moment in history means for mankind. Pastor Matt Treagus spoke from 1 Corinthians 1:30 "It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God - that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. There, as it is written: "Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord."
The Chaplains also shared what Easter means via this video message.

Budding Year 6s Business 'Shark Tank' Experience
31 March 2022
King’s budding Year 6 entrepreneurs have been working on a Business Plan this term as part of their PBL Business and Economics topic. Students were tasked with creating a product or service that would contain sustainability principles. They then produced a business case with a plan to commercialise their product and worked on a 'pitch' for a team of visiting venture capitalists. All of the Year 6 students created fantastic business proposals and the top six were selected for King’s Shark Tank culminating event.
On 28th March, the King’s auditorium was filled with a captive audience of Year 6 students, who watched in anticipation as their peers presented their ideas to the ‘sharks.’ The four sharks followed with some challenging questions but the students responded with confidence. Congratulations to our winning entrepreneurs whose product was called MultiSip! Chase McLaughlan, Jacob Tunbridge & Malachi Patterson designed a drink bottle that can contain multiple drinks.
Many thanks to our amazing 'Shark' judges, Mr Jason Knight, Mr Ralf de la Mare, Mrs Elize Strachan and Mrs Hope Malcolm, for giving their time and bringing their management expertise to help select our 2022 winners.
NASA Challenges Year 5s to be Successful Learners
30 March 2022
This term Year 5 in PBL (Project Based Learning) we have been working on NASA and astronauts. The Year 5 students worked on slides for completing the task of answering the driving question,”What can we learn from NASA to acquire the skills for being a successful PBL Learner”? This was the main question that relates to the PBL slides for Term 1.
All of Year 5 enjoyed this topic, it was challenging, complex, and pushed them to try their best. Year 5 learned about handing in their work on time and how astronauts live in space. We learned about the order of the planets and how hard it is for the astronauts to exercise in the International Space Station. We also learned about communication over time. We looked at old-time phones, satellites, tv, rockets, radios and more old-time equipment and compared them to the new, modern versions.
The Year 4 cohort came into our classrooms to take a look at what we had done. Year 5 explained how to line draw and animate their own faces. We blessed them with Milky Way chocolates, and colouring sheets linked to space. Each student made graduation hats to show that they have graduated from our space/NASA subject. We are super excited to see the topic we will have next term!

Primary Specialists Review of Term 1
31 March 2022
Specialists have been very busy this term enjoying teaching their various specialist areas.
In Music, students have enjoyed learning a variety of musical instruments including guitar, percussion and the recorder. They have also responded to musical elements with a variety of different pieces. Overall they have enjoyed this term immensely.
PE with Mr Foster and Ms Bogatie has been full of new experiences despite the rainy and hot weather. Students have learnt new games, new movements and new sports while using new equipment. Looking forward to Term 2 and extending the student's knowledge and experiences in PE.
Art with Mrs Doyle has been a creative time as students learnt to weave, paint and draw in various mediums. Students are looking forward to more creative art lessons in Term 2.
STEM with Mrs Clark and Ms Bogati has been enjoyable, exciting and interesting. During the term Stem Habits of Mind were taught through various science lessons for P-2 students, Australian plant biodomes were made in year 3 and robotics, coding for years 4, 5, and 6 were really fun lessons.
In Spanish, the students have been kept on their toes whilst learning the fundamentals of the Spanish language. It has been remarkable to see how easily the students can learn a second language with Mrs Olivaries
Overall it’s been a crazy fun-filled term and students have loved the dynamics of learning. They have embraced the challenges and accepted the unexpected twists and turns we all had.
God has orchestrated something special for Term 2 and we look forward to walking into it. See you all around the campus.

Library Lover's Week Winners Announced
15 March 2022
Each year our libraries hold Library Lovers' Day, to celebrate the valuable role libraries play in our students' lives. This year we decided that this event is so big we needed to celebrate all week!
Our library was decorated for the occasion and our staff wrapped hundreds of books for the high school students to have a “blind date with a book”. Throughout the week there were many opportunities for students to enter competitions and participate. All students from Year 5 – 12 who borrowed a book during the week went into a daily and weekly draw, with 14 prize winners. Our “Show the Love” competition saw students write letters to the library and 5 prizes were given out. For our Prep-Year 4 students, we held a colouring competition with 5 book prizes awarded. We had the largest response to date in all our competitions, showing that our students love our libraries, and we love them coming in!

NAPLAN 2022
21 March 2022
It is hard to imagine, but with Term 2 almost upon us, it is time to start turning our attention to planning and preparing for NAPLAN.
WHAT IS NAPLAN?
The National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is designed to provide regular data on student achievement in the areas of literacy and numeracy, essential skills that each child needs to succeed.
NAPLAN is a point-in-time assessment that allows you to see how your child is progressing in literacy and numeracy against the national standard and compared with their peers throughout Australia. King’s teachers frequently use NAPLAN data to provide additional information about student progress, as well as to support the College in making informed decisions regarding differentiation and targeted teaching in the classroom, to improve future student outcomes.
NAPLAN testing takes place in May each year. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in tests for reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation), and numeracy. This year, King’s will be conducting NAPLAN online.
PARTICIPATION AND ADJUSTMENTS
At King’s, we expect and encourage all students to complete the NAPLAN testing process, and we are pleased with our established tradition of high levels of participation. During the testing window in May, catch-up tests will be offered for students who are absent on test days.
Support can be arranged for students with specific learning needs, particularly if a student regularly accesses similar support for school assessment tasks. Students may also be withdrawn from NAPLAN; this is a matter for consideration by parents and carers, in consultation with the College, and would require a signed withdrawal form.
For parents of Year 3 and 5 students:
If you wish to discuss your child’s participation in NAPLAN, please email:
Year 3 - Miss Emma Harmon: eharmon@kingcsollege.qld.edu.au
Year 5 - Mrs Elize Strachan: estrachan@kingscollege.qld.edu.au
For parents of Year 7 and 9 students:
Please click on THIS LINK to register your intention to apply for withdrawal or adjusted conditions.
If you wish to discuss your child’s participation in NAPLAN, please email Mrs Cassie Grimes: cgrimes@kingscollege.qld.edu.au
FURTHER INFORMATION
Later in the year, you will receive your child’s personal NAPLAN report outlining their results and how they performed in relation to national standards. The information you receive will be valuable in helping you consider your child’s literacy and numeracy progress.

Every year in the first school term, we hold a Captains’ and Prefects’ Induction Service to present our Middle School leaders with their leadership badges. This year, we held the ceremony on Wednesday, 9 March, and many family members attended as special guests as they witnessed their children receive their badges and joined us as we prayed for our leaders.
Mr Glenn Miles, Head of Culture, spoke to the students about leadership and culture. His message was unpinned by the scripture in Exodus 12:26 that says "And it shall be, when your children say to you, 'What do you mean by this service?' He spoke about what describes the act of doing and why. He stated that everyone is a leader and that our students need to focus on who they are learning to be, rather than what they do. Students need to also think about their futures. Leadership opportunities start in the classroom, at school and at home among the family and will lead to the future workplace. Culture is comprised of what you create and what you allow. Leaders are not born, they are made.
"Successful people do consistently what others do occasionally."

High School Honours Term 1, 2022
30 March 2022
Each semester students are recognised for their hard work, commitment and diligence to their studies.
High School recognised students' success in the areas of Academic, Cultural and School Enhancement (Performing Arts & Service). Honours Badges were awarded at Teal, Bronze, Silver and Gold levels, as determined by the College's Honours Criteria.
Cultural Honours recognise those students who have consistently pursued their passion in the Creative and Performing Arts which included involvement in Mary Poppins, 2021 Performance Night and Music.
In the College Enhancement category honours are awarded to students who represented the College and contribute to advances in various fields, including but not limited to:
King’s LIFE program which includes Missions, Outreach and Service, Media Team
External Competitions include Debating.
A special mention to David Contador, Chanelle Latour, Emanuel Ferisa, Kristian Meuwesen, Jody Samuels and Lily Prodger for receiving the Gold Award in College Enhancement Honours for Service in a combination of the following areas; Chapel Band/ Production, Church Service, Media Team and St George Mission.
Congratulations to the recipients on their outstanding achievements.
During Term 1, High School teachers got students involved in lunchtime activities as a way to build friendships and, in the process, earn points for their House that will go towards the Principal's Cup trophy. Points will count from Term 2.
For the first House event, a mix of students from the various houses competed in the first in a series of Capture the Flag type events on Tuesday 15 March. Tyler Lama was a stand out for his team and scored for the team.
The aim of the Capture the Flag events is to steal each other's flag - it's a Best of 3 Matches to see who wins.
A time limit is set for the event and it works like this: If the time limit reaches zero and no team has stolen a flag then the winning team will be the team with the least players in the prison. If you are tagged on the other team's side you now need to go to the prison located at the back of their half. You can save your team in the prison by running into the prison without being tagged, this will free all of your prisoners.
"These events are all about getting the students to be competitive and trying to promote physical activity, house spirit and participation," said Mr James Coles.
"Other events that will add points to the Principal's Cup include a basketball shootout competition to see who can be accurate under pressure and the tug of war."
"Our Year 7 students had the biggest turnout of students on the day. It was awesome to see them all getting involved. They had double the number than the other high school year level," said Mr Coles.
Rayleigh and Newton had the biggest turnout of students at the first event.

Cross Country Carnival 2022
31 March 2022
Term 1 kicked off the Cross Country season with over 40 students attending training sessions each week. The weather was causing havoc in the earlier weeks but we were blessed to have an awesome race day. There was lots of camaraderies out on the course and our students competed to the best of their ability. Thank you to all the family supporters who cheered on our athletes to push just a little bit harder. I saw many parents running their own cross country to capture those perfect race photos. It was a very close finish for Primary House Champion with Tyndale winning by only 2 points!!! Finney took out the High School Corss Country with their high numbers in participation.
Thank you to all the groundsmen and sports teams for making the day happen. Without these people spending hours setting up and packing up, the day wouldn't have been the same!

Jacob Hankinson Achieved PB at Qld Champs
5 April 2022
Year 7 student, Jacob Hankinson, participated in the LA Qld State Championships on 12th March in Brisbane and improved on his athletics achievements at this meet.
Jacob competed in the 13 Age Group 1500m run where he competed against 25 other state qualifiers and placed 6th overall against a really tough field with an awesome time (and beating 12 seconds off his previous PB) of 4:58. His goal for 2022 was to run this race in under 5 minutes.
The 1500m race is his better event but he also qualified for the 800m run and out of 30 state qualifiers came 9th overall with a PB time of 2:31.
"It was hard to run the 800m backing on such a huge 1500m run but I am proud of what I achieved and am so happy with my results," said an excited Jacob.
