View all 2024 & 2025 Term Dates View Compass CalendarAs we continue to journey through the school year, Mr Taylor shares a pertinent message about the impact of our words on shaping our community. He encourages us all to use positive and uplifting communication, reflecting our values of respect and kindness, which are essential to our school environment.
Our 2024 Day of Hope was transformed into a vibrant festival of giving through our combined cultural celebration day. Our school celebrated our multicultural community as we united to support 100% hOPE, raising funds for this remarkable charity. 100% hOPE is making a profound impact in the lives of underprivileged children in Uganda, with their ongoing work in operating Hope Village - a vibrant village community providing housing for orphaned children, a medical clinic, primary, secondary, and vocational training schools, and implements self-sustainable projects for local communities. Our College community embraced this year's Day of Hope with enthusiasm as they donated generously, purchased from our LIFE Canteen, and enjoyed cultural performances by our talented students in the amphitheatre. At King's, we embody our Foundational Values by showing love and compassion to those in need. Through initiatives like our Day of Hope, we can make a lasting difference. A heartfelt thank you to the LIFE team for your hard work in making our fundraising events possible and to our King's families for your unwavering generosity. Together, we can positively impact the world.
Thursday, 16 May, marked 100 days until our Year 12 students graduate from King's. They celebrated with a pancake breakfast in The Hub and a Pyjama dress-up day. Despite appearances, there was no sleeping in class for these diligent students, who are working hard to finish well. Enjoy your final 100 days at King's, Year 12!
Excursions are an exciting way to bring our learning to life, and our Years 10, 11, and 12 Visual Art classes were thrilled to visit the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) in Brisbane to gain inspiration for their own creative work. They explored the 'Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art' exhibition, featuring 35 artworks by Year 12 Visual Art students from across Queensland, selected from thousands of entries. Ben Carlin, a 2023 graduate from King’s, had his work chosen for this special exhibition and our students were thrilled to see his work on display. Congratulations, Ben! The group then visited the Home of The Arts (HOTA) to view the 'Italian Renaissance Alive' exhibition, concluding an incredible day immersed in art.

Navigating Term 2: Supporting Students and Empowering Parents
As we enter Term 2's busy assessment period, we are so pleased with the progress our students are making in their subjects. In visiting classes, we have seen clear enthusiasm for learning, the effective use of technology, invaluable one-on-one assistance, and contemporary examples linking classroom learning to real-world applications, making the content more relevant and engaging for our students.
Assessment and Staying Organised
As assessment quickly approaches, you can support your child’s learning journey by encouraging them to carefully review any feedback on their drafts and formative tests. This feedback is crucial for their development, and understanding the teacher's comments can significantly improve their work. A key challenge for secondary students is staying organised and meeting deadlines. As a parent, staying connected to your child's timelines and coaching them to meet these deadlines is essential. Discuss their deadlines with them and help them balance their schoolwork with other commitments such as sport, church, and part-time work. Help them to plan a study schedule that works for them. You can find assessment due dates in our assessment calendars here.
Parent Teacher Conferences
It was wonderful to see so many parents in person and online at our recent parent-teacher conferences. These sessions are a fantastic opportunity to build stronger partnerships between home and school. If you missed this opportunity, please feel free to email your child's teachers for feedback about their progress. If students need more support to achieve their academic goals, teachers will usually contact parents directly to discuss strategies for improvement. King's also offers free homework and assignment help with our Heads of Department during various lunchtimes. There is also free after-school tutoring available Monday - Thursday with King's high-achieving alumni. Your involvement and support in your child's education are greatly valued. By working together, we can help our students achieve their full potential.
The High School Teaching and Learning Team
Last Wednesday evening, our Science Department hosted an engaging STEM Quiz Night. The event saw a great turnout, with 15 teams participating in a range of challenging questions on Science, Technology, and Mathematics, as well as competing in a thrilling 'egg drop' Engineering challenge. Our Year 12 STEM Ambassadors - Jerome Mak, Sunho Choi, Tikaia Craig, Ashley Kwon, Flora Chen, and Aclaire Sethakulvichai - organised and led the event. They showcased exemplary leadership skills and served as inspiring role models for our younger students. Thank you to our ambassadors and participants for such a fun learning experience.

This term, our Year 10 English students had a special guest for their poetry unit: Lance Corporal David Miles of Company A, 9 Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment. The Vietnam War veteran shared his story with students and teachers on Tuesday, 7 May, in the Flexible Learning Space. Lance Corporal Miles, now in his eighties, enlisted at 23 in 1966 and trained at Kapooka and Canungra before serving over a year in Vietnam in the late 1960s. He described the Australian forces' peacekeeping efforts in South Vietnam and their encounters with the Viet Cong. An experienced speaker, Miles recounted the divided opinions in Australia during the '60s about the war, sharing vivid stories of jungle patrols and the strict silence required in hostile areas. His talk provided valuable insights for students studying creative writing and poetry. Hearing firsthand accounts enriched the students' understanding of Australia's history and helped them with their studies. We thank David for his wisdom and courage which has inspired our students in their creative writing endeavours.
Last term, a handful of our English students and teachers attended Storyfest, hosted by Somerset College. There were many workshops, career pathway sessions and a Writer's Dinner for students to attend, run by prominent Australian authors and illustrators. The workshops were fun and interactive as well as informative, and students were given the opportunity to ask questions and meet the authors and illustrators presenting.
On Wednesday, 22 May, King's joined with many schools and Early Learning Centres from across the Pacific for the 2024 National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS). The special annual event is coordinated by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) and features an Australian book that is read simultaneously to young listeners. Now in its 24th year, NSS has become an annual opportunity for educators across Australasia to unite through a shared love of storytelling. It is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using a children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6. The book chosen for 2024 was 'Bowerbird Blues' by author Aura Parker, and it stars a beautiful bowerbird on the search for all things blue. It's a moving story about the need for longing and connection, as the bowerbird's search sends him soaring across the sea, sky and city. King's Primary students marked the occasion during their classes that morning as they sat virtually alongside more than a million students from across Australia and New Zealand to enjoy the joint literary experience.
Our Year 1 students concluded Week 5 with an exciting, hands-on shoelace-tying lesson provided by Ascent Footwear. The fun and interactive session guided the children through the nine steps of tying shoelaces, helping them to master the task and tie their own shoes independently. We encourage Year 1 families to continue practicing this skill at home to complete the learning experience and reinforce this newfound skill.
Earlier this term, Year 1 had a Science Incursion at school called Cheeky Changes. Our students were treated to a highly-engaging, interactive show based on the concept that science is everywhere around us. Emphasis was placed on describing observed changes to materials and sensing light and sound from its source. The workshops guided students through a procedure and discussion on how to make, describe and compare physical changes of PVA bouncy balls which they got to keep and take home. It was a wonderful fun-filled educational experience!
Our netball teams shone at the South Coast regional Vicki Wilson tournament, qualifying in all three divisions for the State Finals later this year. With five teams from King's competing in the Cup (Senior) and Shield (Junior) categories, as well as the Open Boys division, our athletes demonstrated exceptional skill and teamwork. The Shield Championship, Cup Development, and Open Boys teams all secured Gold showcasing their dominance on the court. Our Cup Championship and Shield Development teams also delivered strong performances, finishing in second place. This remarkable achievement highlights the dedication and hard work of our players and coaches and we eagerly anticipate their continued success at the State Final. Congratulations!
King's are excited to announce that our chess team was successfully crowned the overall winners at Saint Stephen's College at the Gold Coast Interschool Chess Championships on Thursday, 16 May. Congratulations to King's Team 1 who clinched 1st Place in their division, including students Micah Young, Bryan Yang, Edwin Choi and Joshua Cooper. Well done to Team 2 who secured 2nd Place, including Luka Hart, Kotaro Inukai, Will Cameron and Woojoon Ki. These outstanding achievements were a significant triumph in a competition against 300 other talented players from across the Coast and are very proud of all our students for their dedication to chess!
On Saturday, 11 May, King's Class of 2014 gathered at Surfer’s Pavilion to celebrate their 10-year reunion. Set against the beautiful backdrop of the Nerang River, the event provided the perfect opportunity for former classmates to share stories and reminisce about their school days. Over 70 guests attended and were all eager to reconnect with past teachers and old friends. It was wonderful to see our 2014 School Captains and several KTTC alumni in attendance. The reunion was filled with lively chatter, laughter, and even a few tears as the group relived memories, renewed friendships, and appreciated the importance of staying connected. Events like this highlight the strong community spirit at our College and the enduring bonds formed by our students. Congratulations to King's Class of 2014 on a successful reunion—we look forward to many more in the future!
We look forward to welcoming our beloved grandparents to King's on Thursday, 20 June for Grandparent's Day. Noah's Ark will host their event later the same day. Please see the details below and extend this invitation to the grandparents in your family.
